The temperature rises, so you look out the window at your proudest investment. This is why you have a pool in your backyard: to refresh under the beating sun. Few things are quite as refreshing as a pool in a heat wave, but similarly to how pools are subject to the elements during storms or very low temperatures, high temperatures also pose a risk.

Understanding these changes is key to maintaining a pristine and enjoyable swimming environment. Let’s dive into some common issues that may come up during a heat wave and how to solve them!

1. Increased Evaporation

Among the main effects that great temperatures have on water—and as we saw early in school—is evaporation. The relentless sun can cause water levels to drop, potentially leading to a chemical imbalance in your pool’s water.

The solution here is regularly monitoring the water level and adding water as needed to keep a balance. We’ll talk more in-depth about chemicals specifically in a later entry.

2. Rising Water Temperature

As water sits under the sunlight, its temperature rises. If a warm pool seems inviting, you’re not the only one; high temperatures can create an ideal breeding ground for algae and bacteria. As we mentioned in an earlier blog post, the bacteria that feed on algae can result in rashes, infections, diarrhea, and other concerns.

The solution for temperature alone is regularly checking your pool’s thermostat and adjusting it as you see fit. Pool covers are an excellent way to keep the temperature under control while you’re not swimming. As for algae and bacteria, we suggest using algaecides and shock chemicals to keep your pool free of outside agents. A heat wave also means that you’ll have to skim, brush, and vacuum more often to get rid of any traces of algae and contaminants.

You can further cool down your pool using a clear canopy to provide shade. You may also choose to run the pump longer, as circulating water isn’t as favorable for life formation.

3. Chemical Imbalances

Heat affects chemicals, altering the balance of your pool’s water. This chemical balance makes the pool water a safe place for you to swim without any risks. Higher temperatures consume more chlorine and affect water alkalinity and pH.

The solution for this boils down to monitoring chemicals and adjusting as necessary. You may test it yourself or reach out to our team to do it for you. If you choose to do it yourself, this is a good rule of thumb. PH should be somewhere between 7.2 and 7.6. Chlorine should be concentrated enough to combat algae growth—you’ll have to keep an eye on this one, as it is consumed more quickly under sunlight. Finally, stabilizer levels should sit between 30-150 ppm.

4. Keep the Sun Away

There’s nothing to do about the weather, but sunlight is a different subject. Invest in a white cover over your pool while you’re not using it. Otherwise, keep a canopy over the water. Both of these keep most of the sunlight’s UV rays away from the water and can protect your pool from contaminants dragged in by the wind. The less water is in contact with direct sunlight, the easier it will be for you to keep control.
